5 of my favorite Chick flick

The sun has come back, birds are singing , the temperature is rising … summer is only a month away !

I’ve just came back from my first gal week-end and it feels so good to take the time to go to the countryside, deep your feet into the (cold) water and have no specific plan for the day.

As it often happens during those weekends, we had a day of rain.

What’s best for this kind of days to rewatch an all-time favorite chick flick ?

Here are 5 of my favorites, in no particular order !

Love, Rosie

love-rosie

Rosie and Alex have been best friends since they were 5, so they couldn’t possibly be right for one another…or could they? When it comes to love, life and making the right choices, these two are their own worst enemies. imdb

This one is such an underrated gem. It’s crazy how this lovely movie is relatively unknown, even from the people into this genre. As I’m fully in my quarter life crisis, there is nothing better than a movie that takes the time to see its character evolving over time (I would guess 10-15 years). Change takes time, self-improvement and finding yourself in life and love too. This movie is far from being fast-paced, but it’s necessary to the story line to explain how things don’t happen in the blink of an eye.

500 days of Summer

feat. over-dramatic Tom Hansen

This one is a classic. A typical boy-meets-pixie-manic-girl, falls madly in love and all that jazz . We’ve seen it over and over again, it’s basically your typical cliché-ed rom-com, on paper. And on paper only. Take the plot and set it in an NYC-indie movie vibes which includes sepia colors, cool music and Joseph Gordon Levitt and Zooey Deschanel as leads. How do you say no to that ? The evolution of the story is far from being already seen and the ending is full of hope. It’s also interesting to see how the reading of this movie evolved in the past year, stating that Tom is the worst and the film as whole is problematic AF. You know what ? That’s what I like about it. The moment we’ll let romantic leads being as flawed as we are, the genre we’ll be able to come back to trend.

Bridesmaids

bridesmaids

Competition between the maid of honor and a bridesmaid, over who is the bride’s best friend, threatens to upend the life of an out-of-work pastry chef. imdb

I vividly remember watching it for the first time. We wanted to go to the movies with Queenmercury and xoAdeline and C., and picked it without knowing what we signed up for. And gosh we laughed, how refreshing was it to see these women bickering over friendship and not over a man ! The gags are also in line with what you would expect from Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph, just hilarious. Bridesmaids doesn’t give you the traditional “soft jokes”, pinks and wardrobe statements that you always get from a chick flick . The gang is real, they are raw and we love them for it.

The Duff

A high school senior instigates a social pecking order revolution after finding out that she has been labeled the DUFF – Designated Ugly Fat Friend – by her prettier, more popular counterparts.

Just to clarify : I was already out of high school when I’ve seen this one for the 1st time, but still in college, so I guess in a kind of inbetweener situation. Also, I haven’t read the book prior to seeing this movie.

This movie is your typical high school movie, with a queen bee, the jocks but an overall flatter hierarchy than what we’re used to. And that’s the catch, even if things have changed and improved on the surface, it’s different while being the same. You see how just as in life, when you enter the work force, you realize that you are surrounded by adults acting like teens in recess. Mae Whitman carries the movie on her shoulders wonderfully and we can’t help but laugh and feel compassion during her character’s downspiralling phase. And yes, I’m a DUFF too.

Pitch Perfect

pitch perfect

Beca, a freshman at Barden University, is cajoled into joining The Bellas, her school’s all-girls singing group. Injecting some much needed energy into their repertoire, The Bellas take on their male rivals in a campus competition. imdb

I think that this movie took everyone by surprise. Nobody expected anything from it and it became an instant hit. This gang of stereotyped characters reunited around “Glee-ish” vibes just worked perfectly well. Nothing groundbreaking about this pick, just a strong feel-good movie that you can sing along to, it’s been a while since we had the opportunity to do so ! Add to it powerful one-liners, funny and distinctive new slang (is “aca-scuse-me” the new “fetch” ?) and it’s a wrap ! Unfortunately the following installments of the trilogy were very disappointing but we have this one to watch on repeat, no worries.

Which one of these movies is your favorite in this list and why ? Could you recommend me a good chick flick released during the last 3 years ?
